A Man After God’s Own Heart

What does it mean to be a man after God’s own heart? How could God refer to David this way even though he transgressed significantly?

I think a man after God’s own heart is someone who loves God, loves God’s law, loves God’s people, seeks the will of God above his own, and loves no other gods. All this would display in his character and behavior.

With David we see this shown in his meek and humble character and the constant pursuit of God. In Psalm 16 David is clearly depending on God alone, delighting in God’s people, running after no other gods, and praising God.

Even when David stumbled and sinned, he still turned back to God in repentance and got right back on track with pursuing God’s will, and no other gods. David is 100 percent sold out to God. He does not serve other gods and worship them. Further proof is in 2 Chronicles 7:17, “As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, even to do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my statutes and my ordinances, then I will establish your royal throne as I covenanted with your father David,…But if you turn away and forsake my statutes…and go and serve other gods and worship them, I will uproot you from the land,”
