The Hebrew word translated into the English word “earth” can also mean “dust” (BibleHub, n.d.). Job’s description or proclamation that “at the last he shall stand upon the dust” is in contradistinction to man who, according to the Old Testament, comes from the dust and returns to the dust:
“then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature” (Genesis 2:7 ESV).
